Akwa Ibom Pushes Development Reforms, Expands WASH Services and Digitises Land Administration

The Akwa Ibom State Government has intensified reforms in water supply, sanitation, land administration, and urban development to improve access to essential services, enhance land ownership security, and promote orderly urban grow,th to create a more transparent and conducive environment for residents, businesses,ses and investors.


At a ministerial briefing held at Government House, Uyo, on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, to mark the administration's ongoing accountability engagement on the implementation of its ARISE Agenda, the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, said the administration had recorded more than 95 per cent implementation of the ARISE Agenda within three years and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining engagement with citizens through the media, noting that regular briefings would continue to provide the public with information on government policies, programmes and achievements.


Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ubuo Ubuo, said access to improved drinking water increased from 34.8 per cent to 78.5 per cent, while sanitation access rose from 29.3 per cent to 71.2 per cent. Proper handwashing with soap also increased to 82.6 per cent, while household water treatment rose to 69.4 per cent.


The state government plans to extend solar-powered overhead water schemes to all 369 wards, while implementing its WASH policy, open-defecation-free roadmap and a chlorination programme targeting about 200 water facilities.



In land administration, the Commissioner for Lands and Town Planning, Hon. Ubong Inyang, disclosed that the government is deploying the Akwa Ibom Geographic Information System (AKWAGIS) to digitise land records, facilitate title verification and streamline Certificates of Occupancy processing. The initiative is expected to strengthen land security, curb fraudulent transactions and improve access to reliable property information.


The Ministry of Lands and Town Planning is also intensifying urban planning and development control in Uyo, Eket, Oron and Ikot Ekpene, with greater enforcement of approved layouts and building setbacks.


The government has further approved more than N4 billion in compensation for land acquired for major public projects, while plans are underway for a fully digital C-of-O system, automated land registry, and statewide GIS data hub.
