RMAFC Denies Report Claiming Oil Wells to Be Reallocated Between Akwa Ibom and Cross River States

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has dismissed reports circulating in sections of the national media suggesting that certain crude oil and gas wells may be ceded to specific states.

The clarification comes after a report aired on ARISE News claimed that recommendations had been made by an inter-agency committee tasked with verifying disputed oil well coordinates.

In a statement, signed by

RMAFC Chairman, M. B. Shehu, PhD, OFR, the RMAFC said the report was “misleading, premature, and does not represent the position or conclusions of the Commission.”

“The Commission wishes to categorically state that the purported report is misleading, premature, and does not represent the position or conclusions of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. At this stage, there is no finalised recommendation or decision regarding the ceding or reallocation of any oil wells, as due institutional processes are still ongoing”, part of the statement reads.

According to the statement, the Commission only recently received a draft report from the Inter-Agency Committee on 13 February 2026, which has since been sent to relevant technical agencies including the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the National Boundary Commission (NBC), and the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGOF) for detailed review and technical input.

The statement added that, following receipt of feedback, the matter will undergo further scrutiny by the Commission’s internal tripartite committees before being presented to the Plenary Session of the RMAFC.

The Commission emphasized that only after these processes will a final report be submitted to the President and the Attorney-General of the Federation for action in line with the law.

RMAFC Chairman, M. B. Shehu, PhD, OFR, urged the public, stakeholders, and media organisations to disregard the circulating report, describing it as “speculative, inaccurate, and capable of misleading the public.”

“In view of the above clearly established procedures, the Commission considers the report currently circulating in the media as speculative, inaccurate, and capable of misleading the public. The RMAFC therefore urges members of the public, stakeholders, and media organisations to disregard the purported report and await official communication from the Commission upon completion of the statutory review process.”

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, due process, and the proper discharge of its constitutional mandate in the national interest.
