Jurgen Klopp insists there is plenty more to come from Loris Karius following his initial rise to form at Liverpool.
The German goalkeeper is currently enjoying his best run since arriving at the club in summer 2016 and has arguably cemented his place as no.1 ahead of Simon Mignolet.
A nervy start to life on Merseyside materialised into a prolonged struggle to settle down, subsequently fuelling rumours the Reds will look to strengthen in the goalkeeping department again this summer.
Whilst that may still prove to be the case, Karius’ evident improvement has restored some faith that he could shape up to be a useful option.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “He progressed a lot. I’m really happy with his progress. [There is] still a lot to come, I’m sure.”
“Having games like he had in the last few weeks and months helps; nothing helps you more as a goalkeeper. Having fantastic moments, having rather not-that-good moments, is all part of development.”
“He really took the chance that we gave him a few months ago and was a big part of us being more stable in that period.
Though there remains the odd moment of uncertainty to his game, his surge in confidence and assurance deserves recognition.
Besides offering glimpses of his shot-stopping athleticism, he has also taken meaningful strides with his ability to command his area when defending crosses and set-pieces.
An extended run in the team has worked wonder in terms of striking some familiarity with his back four, with his speed off his line evidently giving his teammates more confidence to step up.
Reds understandably remain divided in opinion over his longevity at the club, with the summer transfer window and next season likely to offer more clarity surrounding his role.
